From Supply Chains to Surpluses: A Quiet Achievement

In the world of commerce, milestones are often measured not only in numbers but in the story they tell about a nation’s place in the wider economic rhythm. This week brought one such moment for Malaysia, as official figures show its total trade in 2025 surpassed the RM3 trillion mark — a testament to persistence amid shifting global currents.

According to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the combined value of goods exported and imported last year reached RM3.06 trillion, up 6.3 per cent from the previous year. Exports alone topped RM1 trillion for the fifth consecutive year, posting RM1.60 trillion, while imports rose to RM1.46 trillion. The result was a trade surplus of RM151.80 billion, extending an unbroken streak of annual surpluses that began in 1998.

Officials said the figures reflect Malaysia’s adaptability and deep integration into global value chains, even as geopolitical tensions, supply‑chain realignments, and protectionist pressures continue to challenge trade flows worldwide. MATRADE highlighted strong shipments to traditional partners such as ASEAN countries, the United States, Taiwan, and the European Union, while growth to China was steadier but more moderate.

The performance underscores how Malaysia’s extensive network of free trade agreements — including frameworks like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans‑Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) — continues to widen market access and reduce risk. By tapping emerging markets and diversifying destinations, exporters were able to maintain positive trends across multiple product categories.

The dynamics of trade last year also showed momentum toward the end of 2025. December emerged as the month with the highest recorded trade in both exports and imports, with imports growing at double‑digit rates compared with the previous year.

Despite these encouraging signs, MATRADE and other observers caution that the outlook for 2026 remains subject to global uncertainties, including trade‑restrictive measures, geopolitical competition, and fluctuating demand worldwide. The World Trade Organization projects only modest growth in global merchandise trade volumes, a reminder that strong performances at home may still be shaped by broader external conditions.

In this landscape, MATRADE said it will focus on assisting Malaysian exporters — especially micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) — to navigate shifting markets and leverage the country’s trade agreements. The goal, officials said, is not only to sustain the record achievement but also to build resilience for the years ahead.

As the RM3 trillion benchmark now moves from aspiration to reality, the figures offer more than a statistic: they depict a nation that continues to find opportunity in exchange, even when the global horizon remains far from certain.
