From Hospital to Handcuffs: Woman Arrested for Setting Sembawang HDB Flat Ablaze

SINGAPORE — What initially appeared to be a harrowing residential rescue quickly turned into a criminal investigation on Monday evening, June 29, 2026 after a fire broke out in a Sembawang Housing & Development Board (HDB) flat.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at Block 512 Wellington Circle at approximately 5:15 PM.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) and local police rushed to the scene following multiple calls for assistance. Videos circulating on social media captured a chaotic scene, showing fierce orange flames and thick, billowing black smoke pouring out from a 10th-floor window. Below, a tense crowd of onlookers gathered at the void deck as emergency vehicles lined the street.

Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus sets entered the smoke-logged unit. The fire, which was heavily concentrated in one of the flat's bedrooms, was successfully brought under control and extinguished using a single water jet.

During the operation, a 46-year-old woman was rescued from the unit. She was found conscious but suffering from smoke inhalation. SCDF paramedics assessed her at the scene before she was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for medical treatment.

However, the narrative took a sharp turn once the smoke cleared.

Following preliminary investigations at the scene, the police determined that the blaze was not an accident. Upon her recovery, the 46-year-old woman was formally arrested for mischief by fire under the Penal Code.

Under Singapore law, committing mischief by fire with the intent to cause damage to property is a severe offense. If convicted, the suspect could face an imprisonment term of up to seven years, as well as a heavy fine.

Authorities have confirmed that the exact cause of the fire and the motives behind the suspected arson remain under investigation.

Residential fires in HDB blocks place entire communities at immense risk, making proactive safety measures essential for everyone. To safeguard lives, the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) strongly reminds all residents to keep common corridors completely clear of clutter, storage, and debris. Maintaining wide, unobstructed pathways ensures a smooth and rapid evacuation route during emergencies, allowing both residents to escape safely and firefighters to navigate the area without delay.
