Borneo has been among the regions affected by the haze. Reuters reported that thickening smoke has covered parts of the island, including Pontianak, where residents have experienced deteriorating air conditions while fires continue in surrounding areas.

The smoke has also become a public-health concern. Fine particles from fires can travel deep into the respiratory system, making prolonged exposure particularly relevant for children, older adults and people with existing respiratory conditions.

Yet the story of the fires extends beyond the smoke that reaches cities. Forest ecosystems can suffer direct damage as vegetation burns, while wildlife may lose habitat and access to food. The consequences can continue long after emergency crews leave an individual fire site.

Satellite observations provide another way to understand the scale. Reuters' analysis of the 2026 season found that burned areas and emissions had risen significantly during periods of intensified fire activity, placing this season among the more severe recent fire periods in Indonesia.

For Indonesia, the fire season also illustrates how weather patterns can reshape environmental risks. El Niño does not create every individual fire, but the associated heat and dryness can create conditions in which fires become more difficult to contain and their effects spread farther.

As authorities continue responding to fires across affected provinces, the immediate work remains focused on containing active fires, protecting communities and monitoring air quality. Behind those efforts lies a larger environmental record being written in smoke, burned landscapes and elevated carbon emissions.
