In a sign that commercial spaceflight is rapidly moving from concept to practice, Vast — a California‑based aerospace startup — has opened a call for scientific research proposals that could fly aboard its upcoming Haven‑1 private space station and associated missions. The company is inviting scientists around the world to submit ideas for experiments spanning diverse fields such as microgravity biology, materials science, medical research and technology development, with the goal of broadening access to orbital science beyond traditional government programmes.

Haven‑1 is designed to be the world’s first crewed commercial space‑based research and manufacturing facility, scheduled to launch into low Earth orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as soon as the second quarter of 2026. At roughly 14 000 kg and capable of supporting up to 160 astronaut days of crewed operations over its planned three‑year lifespan, the station represents a new platform for experiments that benefit not only fundamental science but also applications on Earth and in future human space exploration.

Vast’s request for proposals is noteworthy not just because it seeks cutting‑edge research ideas, but because selected projects will be able to leverage the Haven‑1 Lab, SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft and even private astronaut missions to the International Space Station (ISS) in some cases, although the latter depends on separate arrangements such as awards from NASA. Researchers with approved proposals could receive access to on‑orbit crew time, payload hosting and support for qualification and deployment at no direct cost — a major opening for universities, startups and institutions that have traditionally faced high barriers to orbital experimentation.

According to Vast and partner SpaceX, the goal is to advance research that advances human presence in space and also addresses challenges on Earth. That includes studies in bone and muscle health, stem cells and regenerative medicine, plant growth in microgravity, pharmaceutical development and technologies critical for lunar and Mars missions. Beyond individual scientific aims, the initiative is part of a broader effort to build a commercial low‑Earth‑orbit economy where private stations complement government platforms like the ISS, which is due to retire by the end of the decade.

This push builds on earlier collaboration between Vast and SpaceX, which issued a joint request for research proposals aimed at advancing long‑term human habitation and exploration capabilities in space. That earlier initiative sought high‑impact projects aligned with mission objectives and feasibility in microgravity environments aboard both Haven‑1 and SpaceX vehicles.

If successful, these collaborative research efforts could mark a pivotal moment in how science is conducted in orbit — transitioning from exclusively nation‑driven research on platforms like the ISS to a hybrid ecosystem where private labs play an increasingly central role. For scientists, this represents a rare chance to help shape the next generation of discoveries that could extend humanity’s reach in space and impact life on Earth.
