Yet the ambitions extend further: to build a lunar-orbiting station known as Gateway, to test technologies for future missions to Mars, and to deepen international collaboration in space exploration.

But the meaning of those footprints evolves. Each mission carries not only instruments and experiments, but the weight of who is seen standing beneath the vast black sky.
