From Apartheid's Shadow to Oslo's Light, a Jurist's Journey

There are lives that trace a single unwavering line through the complexities of history—lives that begin in the shadow of injustice and end in the light of a global recognition. Navanethem "Navi" Pillay's journey began in apartheid South Africa, where no law firm would hire her because of her skin, and where she opened her own practice in 1967, becoming the first woman to do so in Natal Province . On Friday, that journey reached Oslo.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Pillay the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law, describing her as a "source of hope and inspiration to all those who seek to bring about a more peaceful world" . At 85, Pillay has served as a judge on South Africa's High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court, and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014 .

Her career has been defined by a willingness to confront some of humanity's darkest chapters. As a judge on the Rwanda tribunal, she helped establish for the first time that rape and sexual violence could constitute acts of genocide . She defended anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela, and later chaired the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which concluded last year that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza . Israel dismissed the report as "scandalous" .

The Nobel Committee's decision carries a message that extends beyond one individual. "At a time when the number of wars and conflicts is rising, and when judges and institutions of international law are under political attack, the Nobel Committee wishes to issue a reminder that the ability to resolve conflicts without force or violence is dependent on the international rule of law," the committee wrote . Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes noted that international law is "under tremendous pressure" and that "when might overtakes right, it undermines stability" .

Pillay learned of the award while attending a forum in Nuremberg, where she initially joked that she might "share the prize" with President Trump . "It must be a joke," she said. "But, being a lawyer and a judge, I still want to verify this thing" . Upon confirmation, she dedicated the award "to all of the survivors of international crimes" and to those who defend international justice .

Reactions arrived from across the world. UN human rights chief Volker Türk called it "a collective win for human rights and for all those seeking justice and accountability" . European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Pillay had "looked the brutality of injustice in the eye and never looked away" . South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa described the award as "a profound tribute to the veteran jurist's courage, integrity and lifelong commitment to justice" . Israel's Foreign Ministry, however, said the award "legitimised anti-Israel hatred" .

Pillay's colleague on the UN commission, Chris Sidoti, told the ABC that she is "a modest, unassuming lovely and very funny person" who is "entirely focused on the law" . "I doubt there has ever been a Nobel Peace Prize recipient more deserving of it than Navi," he said . She continues to serve as a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide .

The Nobel Peace Prize has often been awarded not to those who end wars but to those who build the frameworks that make peace possible. Pillay's life work—from apartheid courtrooms to international tribunals—has been a long argument that law, however imperfect, remains the most durable bridge between power and justice. The committee's recognition affirms that argument, and the woman who has spent a lifetime verifying it.
