Freight Train Hauling Hazardous Chemicals Derails In Ohio, Residents Evacuated, Crews Scramble To Contain Spill

Springfield, United States— A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed at 2:14 a.m. on October 30, 2026, outside Springfield, Ohio, toppling 17 cars and igniting a fire that sent black smoke over Clark County farmland.

The train, Norfolk Southern 32N, was running from Columbus to Dayton with 124 cars. Six of the derailed cars were placarded Class 3 flammable liquids and Class 8 corrosives. Two tankers ruptured on impact. One jackknifed into a ditch and began venting vapor.

“It sounded like a building falling, then the air changed,” said Karen Wells, who lives 600 meters from the tracks. “We could smell chemicals. Deputies told us to leave right away.”

Clark County Emergency Management ordered a one-mile evacuation. About 220 residents were moved to a high school gym in Springfield. Fire crews let the main fire burn under control rather than spray water onto mixed chemicals. Hazmat teams from Dayton arrived with air monitors.

By daylight, the wreck was still burning in two spots. Drone footage showed charred tank cars stacked at odd angles, with a sheen spreading in a creek that feeds the Mad River. The Environmental Protection Agency set up mobile sampling units along the creek and downwind.

NBC News reported the train had triggered a hotbox detector 12 miles earlier. The crew had slowed, inspected, then continued under a slow order. Investigators will want to know what that inspection found. The railroad said the train was operating within federal rules.

“We have not lifted the evacuation because we still have unstable product,” said Clark County Fire Chief Ron Lewis. “We are measuring hydrogen chloride, we are measuring particulates. No one goes home until numbers are clean.”

The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a 12-person team. Federal Railroad Administration inspectors arrived by noon. They will pull the locomotive event recorder, interview the two-person crew, and examine a section of rail that residents said had been under repair this week.

Tonight the fire is mostly contained but the evacuation holds. Crews are building a containment dam in the creek. Air monitoring continues through the night. The cause remains undetermined.
