Free public transport for kids under 11— but it’s region-by-region in the Netherlands

Rather than one nationwide rule, many Dutch cities and operators already offer free or heavily discounted public transport for children aged up to 11 (often with conditions like being accompanied by an adult or living in the municipality).

Free public transport for kids under 11— but it’s region-by-region in the Netherlands

Public transport for children under 11 in the Netherlands depends on where you live and which transport operator serves your area—there isn’t a single “throughout the whole country” policy announced as a uniform rollout.

For example, in Utrecht, children up to and including 11 travel free on buses and trams when accompanied by an adult aged 18 or older (with a limit of up to three children per adult). In Amsterdam and The Hague, free travel schemes also exist, but they are tied to residency and/or run as time-limited pilots rather than applying nationwide.

So if you’re planning travel next year, the practical move is to check the rule for your city/region (and your specific age) and then buy tickets or sign up for any child free-travel subscription if required. In many areas, free travel also comes with an OV-chipkaart/OVpay or registration requirement
