IPOH, Malaysia — A violent freak thunderstorm accompanied by "tornado-like" winds ripped through the major suburb of Bercham on Friday afternoon, June 19, 2026 damaging more than 200 homes and causing widespread power outages across seven residential areas.

The sudden tempest struck at approximately 3:45 PM, turning an ordinary Friday into a scene of chaotic destruction. Heavy downpours paired with severe localized wind gusts completely tore off rooftops, uprooted mature trees, and snapped utility poles, leaving parts of the neighborhood completely blocked by debris.

Emergency responders confirmed that the areas of Anjung Bercham and Tasek Timur bore the absolute brunt of the storm's fury.

Terrified residents recounted the speed and ferocity of the sudden gusts. Local resident Minder Singh, who lives in Dataran Tasek Timur 3, described watching helplessly as the heavy winds escalated instantly.

"My wife and I were watching television when it suddenly started raining. I went to shut the windows because the wind was very strong," he said. "When I looked outside, I saw the awnings of my house and my son's house next door being blown onto the electricity pole in front."

Another local property owner, Sirach Daniel, was shocked by the devastation to his rental property after receiving a frantic call from his tenant. "It was like a tornado just hit here. The roof of the house has been blown off. It is very bad," Daniel stated, noting that a fallen electricity pole crashed directly onto the building's lines, with damage repairs estimated to climb as high as RM300,000.

The Kinta District Civil Defense Force (APM) operations control center received emergency calls beginning at 5:20 PM and deployed units to stabilize the hardest-hit sectors. The violent rain and gale-force winds lasted roughly an hour and a half.

To eliminate fire hazards and structural electrocution risks from dangling live wires, utility provider Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) systematically cut off power supply to the heavily impacted neighborhoods around Anjung Bercham as a strict precautionary measure.

The Ipoh City Council (MBI) immediately mobilized rapid-response clearing crews to the affected roadways. Armed with chainsaws and heavy machinery, council workers began the arduous task of cutting down and clearing massive toppled trees and twisted metal scaffolding that choked the community's primary roads.

Local authorities are currently assessing the structural integrity of the severely unroofed homes; though miraculous early assessments indicate that no casualties or severe injuries have been recorded. Impacted residents facing major structural breaches have been advised by community leaders to file official police reports to expedite state emergency relief funding.
