Fourteen Auckland Prison Staff Arrested Following Major Investigation

AUCKLAND — A sweeping, multi-agency police operation has targeted systemic corruption inside Auckland’s correctional facilities, resulting in the simultaneous arrest of 14 prison staff members. The extensive investigation has exposed a sophisticated web of illicit activity, with officials accused of taking bribes to smuggle contraband and conspiring to distribute class A narcotics to inmates.

The targeted raids spanned multiple corrections sites across Auckland, taking down staff from both publicly and privately managed institutions.

Police arrested nine staff members from the public Mt Eden Corrections Facility (MECF), ranging from standard to senior Corrections officers. Additionally, five reintegration officers were arrested at the Kohuora Auckland South Corrections Facility, a site privately operated by multinational contractor Serco.

The Department of Corrections and Serco both confirmed they provided extensive assistance to the police throughout the months-long operation leading up to the active terminations.

Charging documents reveal a deeply troubling pattern of behavior, with investigators alleging the criminal conduct stretched across multiple dates through 2025 and into 2026.

The primary charges filed include official corruption, with 12 officials accused of accepting bribes to smuggle contraband into prisons, an offense carrying up to seven years of imprisonment. Additionally, multiple officials face drug conspiracy charges for allegedly scheming to supply methamphetamine to unknown prisoners, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years.

Finally, at least one official is accused of perverting the course of justice by instructing colleagues to stick to a fabricated story if questioned by police and to delete data from their mobile phones.

"Any prisoners or staff taking part in this sort of activity will be found out and held to account," stated Dave Pattinson, Deputy Commissioner of Men's Prisons. "The overwhelming majority of our 11,000 staff act with integrity and honesty in a demanding environment, and this criminal behavior will not be tolerated."

The arrests have sent shockwaves through New Zealand's justice system, prompting immediate scrutiny over how easily contraband and highly addictive narcotics like methamphetamine could infiltrate maximum and medium-security wings.

The accused staff members made their initial appearances in the Auckland District Court. Because active terminations and wider police operations are still ongoing, authorities have noted that further charges may be laid as digital evidence from seized phones is analyzed.
