Dhaka, Bangladesh—A speeding freight truck slammed head-on into a light auto-rickshaw on a national highway Sunday morning, killing four people instantly and triggering protests over heavy vehicle speed management along regional transit routes.
The collision took place at approximately 9:15 a.m. along a two-lane highway stretch where three-wheeled passenger vehicles frequently mix with heavy commercial traffic. Eyewitnesses reported that the cargo truck was attempting to overtake another vehicle at high speed when it veered into the oncoming lane and crushed the passenger rickshaw.
The force of the impact destroyed the light aluminum frame of the auto-rickshaw, sending wreckage across both lanes of traffic. Police confirmed the rickshaw driver and three passengers died immediately upon impact from massive head trauma.
Highway patrol officers arrived within minutes to secure the scene and control a gathering crowd of angry local residents who briefly blocked truck traffic along the corridor. Emergency crews deployed specialized cutting tools to remove the victims from the crushed frame.
The driver of the freight truck abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash. Police impounded the heavy transport vehicle and initiated a manhunt to arrest the driver on charges of reckless driving causing death.
"The truck pulled out to pass without checking the lane, and the rickshaw had nowhere to turn on the narrow shoulder," said witness Rafiqul Islam, who was standing near a roadside shop. "It happened so fast that there was no sound of braking before the crash."
Transportation safety groups pointed to the ongoing issue of mixing slow-moving three-wheeled vehicles with heavy freight trucks on unsegregated regional highways, where fatal collisions remain frequent. Local authorities promised enhanced patrol checkpoints along the corridor.
Tow trucks cleared the crushed wreckage from the roadway around noon, allowing highway police to restore full traffic flow. Municipal investigators remain on site recording tire skid marks and vehicle positions to complete the official traffic report.
