HANDWARA — Four people sustained injuries on Wednesday after an auto-rickshaw they were traveling in overturned near Kralgund in North Kashmir’s Handwara area. According to local reports, the vehicle lost control while negotiating a stretch along the main road, causing it to flip over on its side. Local residents and passersby immediately rushed to the spot to assist with rescue operations and pull the trapped passengers from the overturned vehicle.
All four injured individuals were swiftly evacuated and transferred to Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara for medical treatment. Hospital sources reported that the victims are currently undergoing treatment and are in stable condition. Local police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to assess the situation and regulate traffic movement. Authorities have registered a case regarding the mishap, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Eyewitnesses at the scene noted that the road condition in the area, combined with excessive speed, may have contributed significantly to the driver losing control. Several locals expressed growing concern over frequent traffic mishaps along this particular stretch, urging authorities to install speed breakers and clearer road signage to prevent future incidents.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, community members rallied to assist emergency services, managing traffic flow before the police arrived to ensure an unobstructed passage for the responding medical teams. Their quick action proved crucial in getting the victims out of the wreckage and into the ambulance without unnecessary delays.
Following the admission of the victims, medical officers at GMC Handwara confirmed that necessary diagnostic scans and primary care were administered promptly upon arrival. Transport department officials are also expected to inspect the involved auto-rickshaw to verify if mechanical failure played a role in the rollover.
Meanwhile, local administration officials assured the public that road safety concerns raised by the residents would be evaluated promptly. District traffic authorities are planning a joint inspection of the accident-prone stretch in the coming days to identify blackspots and implement necessary safety measures, including speed restrictions and enhanced policing.
