Shanghai, China— Four members of one family died Saturday after fire tore through their apartment in a residential building in Shanghai.
The blaze broke out at around 3:20 a.m. local time in Putuo District, on the 14th floor of a 24-story residential block. Flames spread quickly through the unit. Thick smoke filled the stairwell. Neighbors woke to alarms and shouting. Some tried to help. The heat pushed them back.
Firefighters from three stations arrived within 12 minutes. They found the apartment fully involved. Two adults and two children were inside. All four were pronounced dead at the scene from smoke inhalation and burns. The victims were a couple, their 8-year-old son, and the woman's mother.
More than 80 residents were evacuated from upper floors. Six were treated for smoke inhalation. One firefighter suffered minor burns. It took crews nearly 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. The apartment was gutted. The floor above suffered heavy smoke damage.
The Shanghai Fire Rescue Bureau said the initial investigation points to an electrical fault in the living room. An overloaded power strip connected to a heater and other appliances may have short-circuited. The building is 18 years old and had passed its annual fire inspection in March.
"The fire developed very fast. The door was open, smoke entered the corridor," a district fire official said at a briefing. Officials noted that the family did not close bedroom doors, which allowed smoke to spread inside the unit within minutes.
The property management company said smoke detectors in the common area worked, but it is unclear if the unit had working detectors inside. Neighbors said they did not hear an alarm from the apartment itself. The building has no sprinkler system inside individual units, common in older high-rises.
Shanghai authorities have ordered a citywide check of residential electrical safety, especially with heating equipment use rising. The district government said it will provide temporary housing for affected residents.
The block remains cordoned off while forensic teams examine the scene. The investigation is still open.
