Foggy Highway Chain Crash: One Driver Dead and Twelve Hospitalized in Ontario Pileup

Ontario, Canada—A dense bank of fog blanketed the highway early Sunday morning, triggering a cascading multi-vehicle collision that left one driver dead and twelve others hospitalized. Emergency crews responded to emergency calls reporting multiple crushed cars and jackknifed transport trucks blocking all lanes.

Zero-visibility conditions contributed to the initial impact, causing trailing motorists to slam into stopped vehicles at highway speeds. Paramedics worked through tangled metal and shattered glass to reach trapped occupants caught in the middle of the wreckage.

One individual sustained severe trauma in the initial impact and was pronounced dead at the scene by attending paramedics. Twelve patients were transported to regional trauma centers, with three reported in critical condition.

Provincial police shut down a ten-kilometer stretch of the highway, rerouting all traffic onto secondary rural roads. Towing crews and heavy rotators arrived to pull crumpled sedans away from tractor-trailers.

"Visibility dropped to zero within seconds, leaving drivers on the corridor virtually no time to react," an Ontario Provincial Police officer stated during a press briefing.

Accident reconstruction teams marked tyre marks and vehicle resting positions across three lanes of asphalt. First responders laid down absorbent material to contain spilled diesel fuel leaking from damaged commercial tanks.

Distressed drivers involved in minor fender-benders were gathered into heated transit buses brought to the scene to keep them out of the cold air. Collision investigators checked road surfaces for black ice and collected dashcam footage from involved commercial trucks.

Highway maintenance crews worked alongside towing operators to clear metal debris scattered across hundreds of meters of roadway.

Police are keeping the deceased driver's name withheld until notification of next of kin is completed.

The affected stretch of highway remains closed as investigators finish mapping the crash corridor and crews clear remaining wreckage.
