In the gentle hills of East Lothian, technology once whispered about in workshops has now taken shape in the open sky. Last week, an Edinburgh-based defence company unveiled a new British-built unmanned aircraft system — an attack drone named HAMMER — at an event that drew industry partners and defence stakeholders. What might seem like another advance in military hardware also reflects broader shifts in how nations approach defence, innovation and collaboration in an increasingly complex world.

The HAMMER drone, developed by Edinburgh Drone Company (EDC) in partnership with Aero Solutions Ltd, represents a fixed-wing attack platform designed for simplicity, affordability and domestic manufacture. Unlike some high-cost systems, HAMMER was engineered to be rapidly produced without undue complexity, with its fuselage and final assembly taking place in the UK using European-sourced parts. EDC directors emphasised that maintaining sovereign capability — the ability to build defence technology at home — was a driving goal throughout the development process.

Initially conceived around a 2.5 kg payload, HAMMER’s capabilities have already exceeded its original design in testing, with a payload capacity of at least 3.5 kg demonstrated in trials. In live munitions tests, a 2.5 kg warhead was able to penetrate up to 600 mm of armoured steel. The system can carry a range of payload configurations, including user-fillable cassettes and legacy ordnance such as RPG-7 munitions, and incorporates a safe-arming mechanism to improve preparation safety.

HAMMER is launched from a bespoke catapult system fabricated at EDC’s East Lothian facility and can be operated manually in two flight configurations — offering a standard range of about 22 km or up to 50 km with an extended-range upgrade. Endurance can also be boosted with additional battery modules, giving the platform flexibility for different mission profiles.

Speakers at the launch highlighted what they saw as a milestone for UK defence manufacturing, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. They spoke of a UK industrial ecosystem capable of supporting repeatable production and ongoing improvement, while helping to meet the unmanned aerial system requirements of domestic forces and allies.

Yet in a wider strategic context, HAMMER’s unveiling also sits alongside global trends toward both offensive and defensive drone technology. Countries are investing not only in loitering attack platforms but also in counter-drone systems and interoperability research to balance innovation with safety and oversight. As the skies continue to evolve with new aerial systems, HAMMER stands as both a product of that evolution and a reminder of the debates — technical, ethical and strategic — that accompany it.
