Flooding And Mudslides Force Rescues Along Mexico Coast, Two Drowned, Villages Cut Off Completely

Puerto Escondido, Mexico— Flooding and mudslides forced emergency rescues along the Mexican coast on October 31, 2026, leaving two people drowned and dozens stranded as rivers burst.

The rain came in two waves. The first hit Oaxaca and Guerrero overnight. The second struck in the morning, heavier and slower. Rivers rose fast. The Verde and the Atoyac overflowed. Hillsides above coastal towns slid. Roads vanished.

Civil protection confirmed two deaths by afternoon. One was a 54-year-old fisherman who was swept away while trying to secure his boat in Huatulco. The other was a woman in her 60s whose adobe home collapsed under mud in a hillside colonia near Acapulco. Both bodies were recovered downstream.

Rescue teams worked along a 400-kilometer stretch. In Pinotepa Nacional, soldiers used a military truck to ferry 30 people out of a flooded barrio. In Acapulco, firefighters pulled a family of five off a roof where they had waited three hours. A child was wrapped in a tarp to keep dry.

Highway 200, the coastal spine, was blocked in at least six places. Mud was up to a meter deep. One slide buried a bus that had already been evacuated. Drivers abandoned cars. Some walked 10 kilometers to the next town. Gas stations ran out of fuel.

In coastal villages, the flood was brown and fast. It carried trees, plastic, and pieces of homes. A clinic in San Pedro Mixtepec was inundated. Medicine boxes floated. Staff moved patients to the second floor. Power was cut because transformers were submerged.

The National Meteorological Service said the rain was fed by twin Pacific disturbances drawing moisture from unusually warm waters. It said 200 millimeters fell in 12 hours in parts of Oaxaca. That is double the October average. It warned of more rain tonight.

State governors opened shelters. Oaxaca reported 600 people in 12 shelters. Guerrero reported 300. Food was being trucked in, but roads were still closed. The Navy deployed two helicopters for reconnaissance.

By sunset, water was still high in low-lying zones. Rescue calls kept coming. Officials told residents to stay off rivers and slopes. The death count was holding at two.
