Flames Tear Through Stanway Harvester as Firefighters Battle Major Blaze

COLCHESTER — Emergency services rushed to a popular Harvester restaurant in Stanway, near Colchester, following a rapidly developing and destructive overnight fire.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service units were dispatched to London Road in Stanway at approximately 12:50 AM on Thursday, October 15, 2026 after reports of a major blaze. Upon arrival, crews encountered an intense, roaring fire ripping through the building, prompting commanders to call in immediate reinforcements to attack the flames from both ground level and above.

Firefighters worked tirelessly in sections through the night to bring the aggressive inferno under control. Thanks to swift tactical interventions, crews successfully stopped the flames from jumping to neighboring properties. However, the restaurant building itself has sustained severe fire damage.

Incident Commander Jeremy Tuckwell praised the cooperative spirit of the area, stating, "Firefighters worked hard to tackle the fire in sections and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. Unfortunately, the building has suffered severe fire damage. Thank you to staff from nearby businesses for their support during the disruption."

Crews remained stationed at the scene into the morning hours to dampen down hot spots and ensure the area was secure. Consequently, London Road in Stanway—near the Essex Yeomanry Way roundabout (A1124) heading toward Western Approach—was closed to traffic, causing morning travel delays and prompting authorities to advice motorists and local residents to avoid the area. Despite the disruption, the nearby Sainsbury's supermarket on Western Approach remained unaffected by the road layout changes and stayed open for business as usual.

While emergency crews have largely curbed the emergency, fire service personnel are expected to remain at the location for some time. Once the structure is completely cooled and declared structurally safe, fire safety officers and investigators will enter the site to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Local residents and regular patrons of the popular dining spot have expressed shock and sadness over the incident, which has left a significant gap in the community's dining scene. As recovery and rebuilding discussions loom ahead, local officials have emphasized their commitment to supporting affected employees and working alongside business owners to restore the area once the formal investigation concludes.
