BUKIT BATOK, SINGAPORE — What was supposed to be a quiet pre-dawn Sunday was violently shattered when a sudden fire broke out at a ground-floor coffeeshop at Block 413, Bukit Batok West Avenue 4. Heavy smoke billowed into the night sky as flames engulfed multiple food stalls, triggering an urgent multi-agency emergency response and forcing the evacuation of nearby residents.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) was alerted to the blaze at approximately 3:50 AM. Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered locked shut shutters and heavy smoke emanating from the commercial unit.
Acting swiftly, SCDF officers conducted a forced entry into the shuttered premise to access the seat of the fire. The inferno, which involved the contents and equipment across three individual food stalls, threatened to spread quickly through the unit.
Firefighters deployed two high-pressure water jets to battle the flames, successfully containing and extinguishing the fire before it could breach the upper residential storey's.
As smoke draft surged upward toward the residential units above, police officers and SCDF personnel initiated a precautionary evacuation of the affected HDB block.
About 30 residents were escorted down to safety during the operation. Paramedics evaluated evacuees at the scene, and one individual was subsequently conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for medical evaluation.
Following the incident, local Member of Parliament Lee Hong Chuang visited the site to assess the structural integrity and extend assistance to affected stallholders and residents.
"Beyond the physical damage within the coffee shop, we must also remember the people whose lives and livelihoods have been affected. Behind every stall are hardworking individuals and families who need some time to clear up and start over again."— Lee Hong Chuang, MP for Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC
Grassroots organizations, the Housing & Development Board (HDB), and the local Town Council are currently working alongside shop operators to assist with cleanup efforts and operational recovery. The SCDF confirmed that the preliminary cause of the fire remains under investigation.
