Flames at Dawn: Arrest Made After Jackson Synagogue Reduced to Ashes

In the early hours before dawn on Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi, flames ripped through Beth Israel Congregation — the state’s largest synagogue — leaving its library and administrative offices charred and destroyed in what investigators have ruled an act of arson. Late Saturday night, law enforcement officials arrested a suspect in connection with the blaze, though details of the individual’s identity and charges have not yet been released.

The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m., sending thick smoke through the historic house of worship located on Old Canton Road. Firefighters responded quickly, but the flames had already caused significant damage to parts of the building that housed books, records and sacred objects.

According to Charles Felton, chief fire investigator with the Jackson Fire Department, investigators determined the fire was deliberately set. Later that evening, authorities — with assistance from the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — took a person into custody. Officials have not yet released the suspect’s name or specified what charges they will face.

No congregants were reported injured in the blaze, which occurred during Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Members of the Beth Israel community and synagogue leadership found much of the library and administrative wing reduced to burnt remains, including several Torah scrolls that were destroyed or damaged. In contrast, one Torah that had survived the Holocaust and was kept in a protective glass case remained undamaged.

Beth Israel Congregation — the only synagogue in Jackson — has a history marked by resilience. Its building was previously targeted in a Ku Klux Klan bombing in 1967 because of its involvement in civil rights efforts. That earlier attack also heavily damaged administrative offices and the library, though no congregants were injured.

Congregation president Zach Shemper said on Sunday that services at the synagogue have been suspended indefinitely as leaders assess the damage and work with local authorities and federal investigators. Through this period, the Jewish community has received outreach and support from other houses of worship and civic leaders in the Jackson area.

Jackson Mayor John Horhn denounced the incident as a threat to public safety and freedom of worship, emphasizing that acts of violence against religious institutions — regardless of motive — affect the entire community. Officials from state and federal agencies continue investigating the cause of the fire and any potential motivations behind it, including whether it may qualify as a hate crime.
