BALIPARA, Assam — Five young people lost their lives early on Saturday morning, September 12, 2026 in a severe road accident when their seven-seater passenger vehicle collided head-on with a high-speed freight truck at Balipara, located in Assam's Sonitpur district.
The devastating crash occurred along a busy stretch of the highway during the early hours of the morning. According to preliminary reports from local law enforcement, the passenger vehicle was carrying the victims back from an event when it collided directly with an oncoming heavy truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The force of the impact completely crushed the front section of the passenger vehicle, trapping the occupants inside the wreckage. Nearby residents and passersby rushed to the scene upon hearing the crash to assist before emergency responders arrived.
Local police teams and rescue crews reached the site shortly after receiving emergency calls. Using specialized cutting tools, emergency personnel managed to extract the victims from the tangled metal. Medical officials pronounced four of the youth’s dead at the scene due to fatal trauma suffered during the high-speed collision. The fifth victim, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to a nearby medical facility but succumbed to their wounds shortly after arrival.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash. Officers are examining factors such as vehicle speed, visibility conditions, and potential lane violations along the stretch of road where the accident occurred.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are with the grieving families," said a senior officer from the Sonitpur district police department. "We have secured the crash site, seized both vehicles, and are currently questioning the driver of the truck as part of our ongoing inquiry."
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the district hospital for post-mortem examinations. News of the incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising fresh concerns over road safety and night-time traffic enforcement on major highways across the region.
