NEW DELHI — A high-stakes search and rescue operation is currently underway in Northeast Delhi’s New Seemapuri area after a five-storey residential building collapsed, trapping several residents under a massive pile of concrete and twisted metal.
Emergency response teams, including local police, fire services, and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rushed to the location immediately following frantic calls from panicked neighbors.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud, thundering crash before the structure caved in on itself, sending up a massive plume of dust that enveloped the narrow alleyway. The sudden collapse caused widespread panic in the densely populated neighborhood, with bystanders attempting to dig through the rubble with their bare hands to clear pathways for survivors before emergency workers arrived.
Heavy machinery, JCB excavators, and specialized earth-moving equipment have been deployed to the site. However, rescue efforts face significant hurdles due to the highly congested lanes of New Seemapuri, which make it difficult for large emergency vehicles and equipment to maneuver smoothly.
While several individuals have already been pulled from the rubble and rushed to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injury, officials fear that multiple victims remain trapped beneath the heavy concrete slabs. Sniffer dog units and thermal imaging equipment are being utilized by disaster management personnel to pinpoint the location of life signs underneath the structural collapse.
"Our immediate priority is locating and rescuing anyone trapped under the debris," said a senior official overseeing the rescue operations at the scene. "Teams are working cautiously to move heavy slabs without causing further instability or risking the safety of those buried beneath."
The exact cause of the catastrophic structural failure has not yet been officially confirmed. However, preliminary reports suggest that a combination of factors—including illegal construction work, structural age, weak foundational framing, and recent moisture damage—may have compromised the integrity of the multi-storey structure.
Local residents claim that several buildings in the congested locality suffer from poor engineering and lack proper structural safety certificates. Authorities have cordoned off the immediate perimeter and evacuated adjoining buildings as a precautionary measure to prevent further casualties in the event of secondary collapses.
District authorities have launched an enquiry into the incident to investigate whether structural modifications or construction violations were carried out on the property without approval. Emergency medical units remain on standby outside the collapse zone as rescue operations continue around the clock.
