Five people, including two children, were rescued on Fanning Island in Kiribati after drifting 5,400 kilometres across the Pacific for nearly three months. They were among nine people who left Murilo for Ruo in the Federated States of Micronesia on July 30, intending a one-hour crossing, but a storm pushed their boat off course. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search on August 9 after covering 25,000 nautical miles. The four others remain unaccounted for. The survivors received medical treatment.
