Five Landslides, Two Rescues, and a Mountain Storm

There is a particular rhythm to mountain flooding—the way rain that falls on high ridges gathers in creeks and rivers, the way the water rises not in a surge but in a slow, relentless climb. In western North Carolina this weekend, that rhythm played out across counties already familiar with the power of storms. The remnants of Hurricane Isaias, which had made landfall in Florida days earlier, brought torrential rain to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the region responded with a quiet, practiced urgency.

In McDowell County, just west of Burke County, first responders dealt with five landslides and voluntary evacuations overnight Saturday into Sunday as flooded roads and overflowing streams forced residents from their homes . The county emergency management agency reported that despite the challenges, there were no known injuries or loss of life—a result it called “a success” . Nearly a dozen local weather stations recorded 24-hour rainfall totals ranging from about 5 inches to as much as 9.57 inches at the fire-rescue station in Enola .

In Burke County, floodwaters from the Catawba River caught two unhoused people camping off guard. They were rescued, along with their dog, according to a county spokesperson . Separately, a woman trapped inside her car in floodwaters was freed outside Morganton . The county had warned residents on Friday that heavy rains “could reach 4 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts approaching 7 inches along the Blue Ridge Escarpment,” noting that flash flooding was of greatest concern in areas draining toward Lake James .

The storm’s impacts extended beyond the mountains. In Burnsville, a viewer submitted photos and video of a fire involving a tree limb and power line . Tornadoes were possible in parts of Virginia and North Carolina, and life-threatening surf and rip current conditions were expected along the Gulf and southeastern Atlantic coasts . The National Weather Service said rainfall was diminishing by Sunday morning, but rapid river rises and flooding remained possible .

For the counties of western North Carolina, the weekend was a reminder of their particular vulnerability. The mountains channel water quickly, and the steep terrain leaves little room for error. The rescues in Burke County—two campers, a driver, their dog—were the kind of outcomes that emergency managers hope for and do not take for granted. The landslides in McDowell County were the kind of hazard that can turn a rainstorm into something more dangerous.

By Sunday afternoon, the rain had largely moved on. The rivers continued to run high, and the ground remained saturated. But the counties had responded, and the people who had been in danger were safe. In the mountains, that is often the best that can be said—and sometimes, it is enough.
