Five Days at the Lectern, and Then the Walk Away

There is a particular kind of brevity that speaks volumes, a tenure so short it becomes its own kind of statement. Five days. In the long history of the White House press secretary's office, no one has held the role for less time. On Friday, Katie Zacharia's brief chapter came to a close.

President Donald Trump fired Zacharia as press secretary, advisers to the president told CNN, ending a turbulent week-long stint as the administration's top spokesperson . Earlier Friday, Trump had told reporters he asked Zacharia to reconsider her role. "Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider," he said he told her. "Katie, do you need this? I don't think you need this" .

Zacharia's troubles began almost immediately. Her first and only press briefing on Tuesday lasted just 14 minutes, during which she appeared nervous and took questions from only three reporters, all from conservative-leaning outlets . Later that day, she offered a confusing answer about where she had passed the bar exam, having been described by Trump as an "attorney" when he announced her hiring. In a series of tense interviews on Fox News, she acknowledged she had never passed the California bar exam .

A White House official told CNN that Zacharia was "transitioning out" of the role, and a Trump adviser said she would leave the White House in the next few days . Trump praised her as a loyal supporter but conceded, "Maybe it's not for her" . A source close to the president said Trump still respects and likes Zacharia as a person, and noted that she and her family were having dinner with Vice President JD Vance on Friday night—a signal that the administration still holds her in high regard .

Her five-day tenure is shorter than that of Anthony Scaramucci, whose 11 days as White House communications director in 2017 had long served as the measuring stick for embattled officials . Zacharia had captured Trump's attention as a conservative commentator on television, and her hiring came quickly after other candidates were deemed ineligible because of critical comments they had made about Trump .

Trump is in no rush to name a replacement, telling Fox News' Peter Doocy at a rally in Georgia that there is no shortlist yet . For Zacharia, the brief tenure ends not with a resignation but with a series of conversations, a dinner invitation, and the president's simple, almost gentle verdict: perhaps she was "not ready for prime time" .
