ROCKHAMPTON — Emergency crews in Central Queensland are fighting a fast-moving bushfire that has ripped through kilometers of dense vegetation, sending vast plumes of dark smoke across the region and threatening nearby rural properties.

Flames amplified by gusty winds and dry conditions forced emergency services to issue urgent safety warnings for residents living in the path of the encroaching fire front.

The fire erupted early in the day, quickly consuming dry undergrowth and expanding along a wide perimeter. Local rural fire brigades and heavy machinery crews were deployed to create containment lines, working against shifting wind directions that continually threatened to push the flames across major access roads.
