Fire Devastates Infamous ‘Eagle’s Nest’: Suspect Arrested in Connection to Blaze

BERCHTESGADEN, Germany — A major fire broke out at the historic Kehlsteinhaus, known globally as the “Eagle’s Nest,” a former Nazi-era mountain retreat built for Adolf Hitler and his inner circle in the Bavarian Alps. Authorities have detained a suspect near the scene, sparking a criminal investigation into potential arson.

Emergency services were alerted late Friday evening around 9:15 p.m. local time after fire alarms were triggered at the iconic mountaintop facility. Around 200 firefighters, rescue workers, and local emergency personnel rushed to the site near Berchtesgaden, close to the Austrian border, navigating steep mountain roads as flames visible from kilometers away engulfed sections of the complex.

Firefighters battling the blaze overnight reported no occupants inside the building at the time, and no injuries have been reported. Search-and-rescue teams confirmed the structure was clear as operations continued into the early morning hours amid falling Alpine snow.

Bavarian police confirmed that officers responding to the call encountered and detained a suspect in close proximity to the site shortly after the fire began. Investigators have launched an investigation to determine whether the individual was directly involved in starting the blaze.

While a police spokesperson noted arson is heavily suspected, authorities have not yet formally confirmed the cause of the fire, nor have they released details regarding the suspect's identity or potential motive.

Perched atop the Kehlstein mountain at an elevation of over 1,800 meters, the Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 as a guest house and diplomatic reception building for Nazi officials and their visitors. Although distinct from Hitler’s primary Berghof residence nearby, it remains one of the most prominent surviving structural symbols associated with the Third Reich.

Having survived World War II largely intact, the property—now owned by the State of Bavaria—has operated since 1952 as a mountain inn, restaurant, and historical exhibition center. Today, it functions under a mandate to serve as a cautionary memorial reflecting on the atrocities of the Nazi regime while attracting visitors for its panoramic Alpine views.

Police have cordoned off access roads leading up the mountain as arson investigators and forensic teams work to assess the full extent of the structural damage.
