BROOKVALE, SYDNEY — A devastating overnight blaze has gutted the top floor of a commercial building in Sydney's Northern Beaches, destroying the premises of the Screen Actors Workshop drama school on Pittwater Road.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after midnight when flames and thick smoke were spotted pouring from the third storey of the mixed-use complex near Winbourne Road. Fire and Rescue NSW escalated the incident to a third-alarm response, dispatching 15 fire trucks and around 55 firefighters to battle the intense flames.
Fire crews deployed elevated platform ladders and heavy hose lines to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading to neighboring commercial properties and ground-floor businesses. The fire tore through the upper levels before firefighters successfully brought the situation under control several hours later.
Crews remained on the scene throughout the morning damping down hot spots and inspecting structural stability, which caused major traffic delays along Pittwater Road during the morning commute. NSW Police and NSW Ambulance assisted at the scene; fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The Screen Actors Workshop, widely regarded as one of the region's long-running performance institutions, provided screen acting courses and training programs for aspiring actors, teenagers, and young children across the Northern Beaches.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation by forensic specialists, community members and local creative's have expressed shock and sadness over the sudden destruction of the beloved studio space. Authorities are asking anyone with dash cam footage or information about the early morning hours to contact local police.
In response to the tragedy, former students, local artists, and arts advocates have already begun mobilizing online fundraising campaigns to support the workshop’s faculty and help recover lost equipment. Community members are pitching in to secure temporary rehearsal spaces so that ongoing classes and youth programs can resume with minimal disruption, emphasizing the resilient spirit of Sydney’s Northern Beaches creative community.
