Fire Breaks Out at Historic Cold War Nuclear Weapons Facility in South Carolina; 1 Injured

AIKEN, S.C. — A fire broke out Wednesday evening at the Savannah River National Laboratory, located on the U.S. Department of Energy's historic Savannah River Site in South Carolina, triggering a temporary site-wide emergency and leaving one employee injured.

The facility, built in the early 1950s near Jackson and Aiken, famously produced key materials—primarily tritium and plutonium-239—for the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal during the Cold War.

The emergency response was initiated after the blaze was reported at the laboratory. The fire prompted the declaration of a "Site Area Emergency", and non-essential personnel were instructed to shelter in place as a precautionary measure.

One employee sustained minor injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and care. As part of standard security protocols during the emergency, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily restricted local airspace, while ground, rail, and river travel in the immediate vicinity were restricted.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. Following extensive checks, officials confirmed that the emergency status was successfully terminated late Wednesday night as protective actions and site barricades were lifted.

Major concerns surrounding safety at the nuclear complex were swiftly addressed by federal and site officials.

Comprehensive radiological surveys conducted across the affected laboratory and surrounding zones confirmed no detectable levels of contamination outside the immediate facility, assuring that public health and the surrounding environment remained safe.

"The Savannah River Site Area Emergency was terminated... Protective actions have been lifted, and site barricades have reopened," officials stated in a late-night release, confirming that subsequent shifts were cleared to return to work as scheduled.

While the sprawling site originally processed massive quantities of radioactive material for military defense during the Cold War, its modern mandate has shifted significantly.

Today, the Savannah River National Laboratory and its surrounding infrastructure focus primarily on environmental cleanup, nuclear waste management, disposition of excess nuclear materials, and vital support for national security.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of Wednesday's fire.
