Manila, Philippines—An unexpected engine room explosion aboard a commercial passenger ferry injured three crew members during a routine river crossing outside the capital.
The blast tore through the vessel's primary diesel propulsion compartment just as the ship approached the mid-point of the narrow inland waterway route.
Thick gray smoke billowed from the stern vents, prompting the captain to drop anchor immediately and signal a distress call to regional maritime authorities.
Nearby fishing boats rushed to the scene to assist with passenger evacuation while coast guard fast response craft cut through the muddy brown water.
"We heard a muffled thunderclap from below deck, and then the whole hull shuddered violently as smoke started pouring out of the engine hatches," recalled passenger Maria Santos.
Paramedics met the crippled vessel at the municipal pier, transferring the burned and smoke-inhalation victims directly into waiting ambulances for emergency transport.
"Three engineering crew members sustained moderate thermal burns and are currently receiving specialized medical treatment at the regional trauma hospital," confirmed coast guard district commander Eduardo Reyes.
Maritime safety inspectors boarded the charred vessel to examine the ruptured fuel lines and twisted crankshaft housing while investigators impound maintenance logs.
