Bratislava, Slovakia— A homicide investigation was opened Wednesday night after a fatal stabbing incident left a man dead on a street in central Bratislava and sent a second man running.
SME News reported the attack occurred at 10:50 p.m. near Obchodna Street. Two men argued outside a bar. Witnesses said one pulled a knife. He stabbed the other in the neck and chest. The victim collapsed on the sidewalk.
Police from the Bratislava I District arrived within five minutes. Paramedics attempted resuscitation for 20 minutes. The victim, 31, was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. His identity has not been released. Police cordoned 100 meters of the street.
The suspect fled toward the Old Town. A waiter who witnessed the stabbing followed him for two blocks before losing him near Michalska Gate. Police said the suspect is male, slim, 25 to 35, wearing a dark jacket and jeans.
Detective Chief Juraj Kovac said the stabbing appeared to follow a dispute over a debt. He said both men had been drinking inside the same bar for over an hour. He said security footage from three premises has been secured.
Forensic teams marked blood evidence, collected the knife sheath found nearby, and took statements from eight witnesses. The bar was closed for evidence processing. Patrons were interviewed until 2 a.m.
The area around Obchodna Street remained closed overnight. Residents watched from balconies as police dogs searched alleys. One resident said shouting and breaking glass are common on weekends. Another said police response was fast.
Prosecutors classified the case as murder. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at the Forensic Medicine Institute. Police said they are reviewing criminal records of known offenders in the district.
No arrests have been made. Police appealed for anyone who was near Obchodna Street between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. to provide phone video. The investigation is active.
