Fatal Road Collision in Ta Kwu Ling: Cyclist Dies After Minibus Strike on Friday

Ta Kwu Ling, Hong Kong—A 69-year-old cyclist died following a collision with a public light bus on Man Kam To Road early Friday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 6:27 a.m. as the minibus traveled toward Sheung Shui. Police report the cyclist was struck near a junction, sustaining severe head injuries that proved fatal.

Emergency responders arrived to find the man unconscious and without a pulse. He was transported to North District Hospital, where doctors certified his death at 6:59 a.m. A 43-year-old female passenger on the minibus also suffered injuries during the sudden stop and was admitted for medical observation.

Officers from the New Territories North traffic division arrived to secure the scene. They cordoned off a stretch of the road for several hours to collect physical evidence and interview witnesses. The investigation into the exact mechanics of the collision remains active.

The 74-year-old driver of the minibus was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities have arrested him on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. He remains in detention as police continue to process witness statements and technical data from the vehicle.

Preliminary findings suggest the cyclist may have attempted to enter the main road from a secondary junction. Reports indicate he failed to stop at a give-way line before the minibus struck him from behind. This theory is currently being verified against traffic camera footage.

The local community in Ta Kwu Ling has long voiced concerns regarding the safety of this particular junction. Heavy vehicle traffic and limited visibility often create high-risk conditions for cyclists and pedestrians alike. Residents have repeatedly called for improved signage and traffic calming measures.

The Labour Department and other local agencies are monitoring the aftermath of the crash. Traffic flow on Man Kam To Road returned to normal by midday once the wreckage was cleared. Official inquiries into the driver’s record and the vehicle’s maintenance status are now underway.

No further information regarding the deceased has been released by the police. The family has been notified and is currently coordinating with local authorities. The file will be forwarded to the Coroner’s Court in the coming weeks.
