Fatal Ride: Passenger Stabs Motorcycle Taxi Rider to Death in Caloocan

CALOOCAN CITY, PHILIPPINES — A routine early-morning ride turned into a horrific nightmare on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, after a 46-year-old motorcycle taxi rider was brutally stabbed to death by his passenger in Barangay 20, Caloocan City.

The suspect, who fled the scene with the victim's motorcycle, was arrested later that morning after a crime spree that stretched into neighboring Malabon City.

The tragedy struck around 1:30 a.m. while the victim, identified by authorities and family members as "Fabio" Norberte, was working his quiet early-morning shift. The horror began when witnesses heard a sudden cry of pain as the motorcycle crashed onto the road in Barangay 20. Upon looking out to see what had happened, nearby residents were shocked to witness the passenger relentlessly stabbing the fallen rider.

"He was stabbing the rider while he was down. No mercy, it was like he wasn't human," one bystander recalled in Filipino. While the severely injured rider managed to briefly run away to seek help, two courageous local residents tried to chase down the assailant. However, the suspect threatened to shoot them, forcing them to back off and allowing him to make a quick getaway on the victim's stolen motorcycle.

Norberte was rushed to a nearby hospital but was tragically pronounced dead due to multiple stab wounds inflicted with an ice pick.

The 43-year-old suspect's run from the law did not last long. According to the Malabon City Police Station (MCPS), the same man went on to rob a pedestrian in Barangay Longos, Malabon City, at around 4:30 a.m.—just three hours after the Caloocan killing.

This time, alert residents in Malabon intervened, cornering and apprehending the suspect. Police quickly took custody of the suspect, recovering the stolen motorcycle belonging to the slain rider and the ice pick believed to have been used in the fatal stabbing.

MCPS Chief Col. Kenneth Mission revealed that the suspect was a serial offender who had also been linked to a prior car napping incident on July 11. "That is really his modus operandi. He usually moves late at night or during the early morning hours," Mission said.

Currently held in police custody, the bruised suspect tearfully begged for forgiveness from his victims. However, the victim's mother, Carmelina Norberte, rejected the apologies, noting that Fabio's 3-year-old child has now been left without a parent.

"Even if they kill him, it won't bring my son back," she said in an emotional statement.

The suspect is facing serious criminal charges, including carnapping, robbery, and homicide. Police have issued safety warnings to motorcycle taxi riders, urging them to remain highly vigilant, particularly when accepting bookings during late-night and early-morning hours.
