Helsingborg, Sweden—A crew member died Thursday morning after falling overboard from a local cargo vessel navigating the choppy waters of the Öresund strait. The distress call reached maritime rescue coordinators at 5:15 AM, triggering an immediate multi-agency search operation involving coast guard cutters and a rescue helicopter.
Strong winds and turbulent sea currents hampered initial search efforts as the vessel drifted off course north of the Helsingborg harbor entrance. Fellow crew members had raised the alarm instantly upon noticing the deckhand missing during routine pre-dawn cargo securing operations on the open deck.
Rescue helicopters equipped with thermal imaging gear scoured a wide perimeter of the shipping lane while surface vessels deployed searchlights across the dark swells. The maritime administration temporarily restricted commercial shipping traffic through the strait to prevent interference with the unfolding rescue grid.
"Weather conditions in the strait were severe at the time of the incident, with high gusts and rough water complicating recovery logistics," stated Coast Guard Commander Stefan Lindqvist. "Our crews executed a systematic sweep of the drift zone based on wind and current modeling."
Divers and rescue swimmers eventually located the missing crew member submerged near a navigational buoy roughly two miles from the initial accident coordinates. Paramedics performed immediate resuscitation efforts upon hoisting the individual aboard the cutter, but vital signs could not be restored.
Maritime inspectors boarded the cargo vessel shortly after noon to examine safety harnesses, deck lighting, and non-slip surfaces along the walkway. Investigators collected statements from surviving crew members to reconstruct the exact sequence of events leading up to the fall.
The vessel remains docked at the Helsingborg port facility while the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority completes its preliminary technical assessment. Port operations resumed normal scheduling by mid-afternoon once the waterway clearance order was lifted by marine traffic control.
The identity of the deceased sailor has been withheld pending formal notification of relatives residing outside the country through consular channels. Preliminary autopsy examinations have been scheduled at the regional forensic medicine unit in Lund.
