Fatal Landslide Hits Nisikhola Village in Baglung District as Heavy Rainfall Continues Across Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal—A overnight landslide triggered by continuous monsoon downpours struck a residential home in the Nisikhola Rural Municipality of Baglung district on September 27, 2026, instantly killing a family of four.

The mudslide swept down a saturated hillside around 4:00 AM, crushing the stone-and-mud structure in Ward 3 while the inhabitants were sleeping inside. Emergency rescue personnel and local residents dug through tons of mud and debris for hours before recovering all four bodies.

District Police Office officials confirmed that the victims belonged to a single household caught directly in the slide's path. Neighboring livestock sheds were also swept away in the collapse, killing domestic livestock across the immediate vicinity.

"The landslide fell directly onto the home during the early morning hours, leaving no time for escape," said Prem Bahadur Ghartimagar, Deputy Chair of Nisikhola Rural Municipality. Local authorities mobilized emergency relief teams to assist surviving neighbors in clearing mud from adjacent homes threatened by unstable slopes.

The tragedy forms part of a larger wave of rain-triggered disasters across Nepal, where late-season monsoon systems have triggered over 500 individual floods and landslips in days. Highways across Gandaki Province remain severed, preventing heavy earthmoving machinery from reaching isolated mountain hamlets.

Geological experts have repeatedly warned that unmanaged rural road construction combined with intense rain bursts has made steep hill settlements highly vulnerable to slope failures. Local infrastructure in Baglung lacks retaining walls and drainage channels capable of handling heavy water runoff.

Disaster management officials in the district capital confirmed that temporary shelter support and emergency cash assistance are being routed to the impacted ward. However, persistent rain and recurring rockfalls along access trails continue to delay government assistance teams.

Police crews finalized recovery operations at the burial site late in the afternoon. Local administrative teams remain stationed in Nisikhola to monitor nearby slopes as weather forecasts predict continued rain across central Nepal.
