HOUSTON — A shooting at a rental property host to a house party in Houston left one man dead and another injured early Saturday morning, October 24, 2026. Authorities have launched a homicide investigation into the incident, which occurred just east of downtown Houston.
Emergency responders and law enforcement officers were dispatched around 1:00 a.m. to the 3100 block of Baer Street following reports of an assault in progress at a short-term rental home being used for a gathering.
Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from severe gunshot wounds to his upper body. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Shortly after officers arrived, an area hospital alerted investigators that a second gunshot victim had arrived seeking medical treatment. The second victim, a man who sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and leg during the same incident, is expected to survive.
Deputy constables from Precinct 6 detained several individuals at the scene for questioning as potential witnesses. However, no suspects have been taken into custody, and police have not yet identified a motive or clear sequence of events leading up to the gunfire.
The Houston Police Department's Homicide Division continues to review surrounding surveillance footage and gather statements from party attendees. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers.
Neighbors in the surrounding East End community reported hearing a sudden volley of gunfire before seeing panicked partygoers scatter into the street and speed away in vehicles. Area residents expressed growing frustration regarding the frequent use of local short-term rental properties for large, unmonitored late-night gatherings, noting that noise and safety concerns have escalated in recent months.
City officials and community advocates have reiterated calls for stricter oversight of short-term rental properties operating in residential neighborhoods. Investigators remain on scene analyzing forensic evidence, and law enforcement agencies are actively appealing to neighbors with ring doorbell cameras or street-facing video feeds to submit any relevant recordings to aid in identifying the suspect.
