Fatal Floods In Nepal, Landslides Destroy Hundreds Of Homes As Death Toll Reaches Twenty Seven

Kathmandu, Nepal—Disaster response units rushed across rural Nepal on Tuesday as the death toll from four days of relentless monsoon-driven rain and massive mudslides reached 27, leaving four people missing and destroying hundreds of homes. Torrential downpours dumped over 500 millimeters of water in key central districts, causing hillside slopes to collapse and sweeping debris directly into populated valleys below.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 542 distinct disaster incidents across multiple provinces between late September 24 and September 28. Landslides accounted for the vast majority of the destruction, demolishing 227 homes and severing major highway links that connect isolated mountain towns to regional distribution hubs.

Emergency military helicopters carried out high-risk evacuations in hard-hit districts like Myagdi and Jajarkot, lifting dozens of stranded villagers off isolated river islands and crumbling ridges. Flooded rivers, including the Kaligandaki and Marsyangdi, triggered urgent flood warnings downstream after temporary mud dams threatened to burst.

Spokesperson Shanti Mahat outlined the scale of the emergency mobilization during a briefing in Kathmandu. "More than 2,000 residents living along high-risk riverbeds and unstable slopes were relocated to temporary shelters," Mahat said. "Security forces are operating under extreme constraints due to damaged bridges and blocked access roads".

In Nawalparasi East and Tanahun districts, automated weather gauges recorded staggering rainfall totals that broke local seasonal records. The resulting runoff inundated agricultural fields, washed out dozens of concrete bridges, and killed over 100 farm animals, destroying rural livelihoods.

Local administrators in remote hill towns reported that whole villages remain cut off from power lines and mobile phone networks. Rescue squads armed with heavy machinery are attempting to clear thousands of tons of mud blocking primary arterial routes to deliver emergency medical supplies.

The Home Ministry dispatched additional rescue teams from the Armed Police Force to clear mudslides choking key mountain passes. Field units continue to search riverbanks for the four missing individuals, though rising water levels complicate search efforts.

While water levels in major river basins began to recede slightly by late Tuesday, meteorological agencies warn that saturated ground conditions keep hillside settlements at extreme risk of secondary collapses. Relief camps continue to receive displaced families as emergency crews clear key transit corridors.
