AMERSFOORT, South Africa — A violent hostage drama on a farm in Amersfoort, Mpumalanga, ended in tragedy on Saturday, October 10, 2026 after a 55-year-old gunman opened fire on captives, killing one man and critically injuring another before turning the gun on himself during negotiations with police.

Police units responded to the scene early in the morning in the Gert Sibande District after receiving reports of an active hostage situation. Upon arrival at around 6:00 AM, law enforcement officers were met by three individuals who had managed to escape the property and raise the alarm.

According to police reports, the 55-year-old gunman held several people hostage inside the farm residence. During the containment, the armed suspect fatally shot a 50-year-old victim on the scene and opened fire on a second victim, aged 53, leaving him critically wounded.

The incident occurred on a rural farm in Amersfoort, located within the Gert Sibande District of Mpumalanga. The standoff left two people dead, including the gunman, and one person critically injured. Emergency medical teams provided immediate stabilization on site before airlifting the 53-year-old survivor to a regional hospital for emergency treatment.

Following the initial gunfire, the suspect barricaded himself inside a house on the farm property. Specialized hostage negotiators and tactical response teams were immediately mobilized to secure the perimeter and open lines of communication in an effort to persuade the gunman to surrender peacefully.

However, as negotiations were underway, the suspect turned a 9mm pistol on himself, sustaining a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police recovered the firearm at the scene.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has formally opened cases of murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping as forensic team's process the scene and investigate the motive behind the attack.

Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise expressed deep concern following the incident, warning of the catastrophic dangers associated with the unlawful use and mishandling of firearms.
