Pontianak, Indonesia— Rescue teams recovered the body of a teenager from a river in West Kalimantan on Tuesday evening, concluding a desperate search that began earlier that afternoon. The victim was swimming with friends when they were pulled under by sudden, powerful undercurrents. Persistent seasonal rains have rendered the river levels volatile.

Local villagers were the first to raise the alarm after the youth failed to resurface. Search and rescue volunteers from the surrounding districts arrived with small boats to begin the grid search. Visibility in the water was near zero due to recent sediment runoff.

The incident highlights the persistent dangers of swimming in unregulated waterways during the transition between weather seasons. Local leaders have posted warning signs at known access points, but they are frequently ignored by local children. This is the second drowning in the province this month.
