Fatal Crash October 16: Two Dead After Light Aircraft Falls Near Drymen, Stirling Area

Drymen, United Kingdom— Two people died when a light aircraft went down in open ground north-east of Drymen on the afternoon of October 16, police said. The victims were a 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man.

Emergency crews were called around 4 p.m. after reports of a crash near farmland on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Police Scotland locked down access roads while fire and ambulance units moved in.

Officers confirmed both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Names have not been released. The force said next of kin have been informed.

The aircraft was a small, privately operated plane. It had taken off earlier in the day from a nearby airfield. Flight path data and eyewitness accounts are now part of the evidence trail.

Stirling residents described hearing a low engine noise followed by silence. One farmer said he saw smoke rising from a field and called 999. The wreckage was contained to a single location.

Police Scotland said the Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been notified and will lead the technical inquiry. The AAIB will examine the airframe, engine, and any available cockpit data.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. The area remained cordoned off overnight for forensic examination. Officers asked the public to avoid the site.

The crash drew a response from the local council and aviation community. Light aircraft traffic is common in the region, with several small airfields serving recreational pilots. Safety checks at those sites continued as normal.

Investigators are expected to remain on site through October 17 to recover the wreckage. A preliminary AAIB report will follow in the coming weeks.
