Luang Prabang, Laos—Two people died today when their passenger boat overturned in the Mekong River. The accident occurred shortly before noon as the vessel was navigating a narrow section of the river. The boat, carrying six passengers, capsized after hitting a submerged log in the turbulent current.

Local fishermen who witnessed the incident rushed to the riverbank to assist those struggling in the water. Four passengers managed to reach the shore with the help of the villagers. Despite these efforts, two individuals were swept downstream by the strong current before rescuers could reach them.

Authorities were notified immediately, and a search operation was launched using several long-tail boats. The river level is currently higher than usual due to recent seasonal rainfall, making the search for the missing victims extremely difficult.

Provincial officials arrived at the site in the afternoon to coordinate the rescue mission. The boat was recovered after snagging on a sandbar several kilometers from the initial point of impact. The two victims were found trapped inside the hull of the overturned vessel.

This stretch of the Mekong is frequently used by locals for daily transport, though it remains prone to hazards during the rainy season. Residents have pointed to the need for better navigational markers and stricter boat inspections to prevent such occurrences.

The families of the deceased are currently waiting at the river port, receiving support from community leaders. A formal investigation into the boat's safety certification and the captain’s handling of the vessel has been opened by the transport department.

Operations on the river have been restricted as divers conduct a final sweep to ensure no other victims remain in the water. The site remains a scene of mourning as the community deals with the loss.
