Dubbo, Australia—A small commercial transport aircraft crashed moments before reaching the runway threshold at a regional airstrip, resulting in the immediate death of the lone pilot on board.
The twin-propeller aircraft went down in an open paddock just short of the perimeter fence, sending a thick column of black smoke billowing across the dry flatlands.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple frantic calls from local farmers who witnessed the sudden descent and subsequent impact just after mid-morning.
Fire crews and paramedics arrived within minutes, but intense flames fueled by residual aviation fuel prevented immediate access to the heavily mangled cockpit structure.
"We saw the plane banking hard to the left before it completely lost altitude and dropped out of our line of sight," stated local witness Ian Henderson from the perimeter road.
Transport safety investigators boarded specialized transport vehicles to reach the remote debris field as forensic teams established a wide perimeter around the scattered wreckage.
