Fast-Spreading Wildfire Sparks Panic Near Homes Along Sukhumvit Road in Sattahip

CHONBURI, Thailand — A fast-moving wildfire swept through a wooded area near residential neighborhoods in Sattahip district on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, prompting a major emergency response as crews fought for more than an hour to prevent flames from reaching nearby homes.

The emergency unfolded around 3:30 p.m. local time when Sattahip Mayor Wasorn Siangchi received reports of a large fire breaking out in a forested area in Moo 3, located directly along Sukhumvit Road in the Sattahip sub district. Driven by dry conditions, the blaze expanded rapidly across the woodland, drawing dangerously close to local homes.

The Sattahip Municipality's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Division, alongside emergency responders from the Khet Udomsak Sub district Municipality, deployed multiple fire engines to battle the flames.

As thick smoke filled the area and flames continued to advance, alarming local residents, several community members jumped in to aid emergency crews before additional units arrived on scene. Concerned neighbors helped pull out water hoses and sprayed water around the perimeter of their properties to create firebreaks and prevent the blaze from jumping to their structures.

Firefighters tackled the blaze from multiple vantage points along Sukhumvit Road. The operation was complicated by areas that had already been doused occasionally reigniting, forcing crews to repeatedly suppress hotspots.

After an intensive battle lasting over an hour, emergency crews successfully contained the fire within a limited perimeter, blocking its path to nearby housing zones. Initial damage assessments confirmed that no residential properties were destroyed and no injuries were reported.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, examining whether the blaze was triggered by natural conditions or intentionally set. Municipal teams remain on site to monitor for reigniting and complete a thorough safety inspection of the area.

In response to the narrow escape, local administrative officials announced plans to clear surrounding dry brush along key residential sectors to reduce fire risks during the remainder of the dry season. Environmental safety personnel also urged motorists and residents traveling along Sukhumvit Road to remain vigilant and report any secondary plumes of smoke immediately, as high winds in the coastal district continue to pose potential hazards for quick-spreading grass and forest fires.
