Explosive Protests in Tirana: Demonstrators Hurl Fireworks at Police in Albania

TIRANA, Albania — Violent anti-government demonstrations have gripped Albania’s capital as thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tirana, launching salvos of fireworks, rocks, and incendiary devices at riot police line barriers guarding key government installations. The escalation marks a volatile turn in nationwide civil unrest driven by mounting public outrage over systemic corruption, steep education costs, and high inflation.

The atmosphere in central Tirana turned hazardous as masked and hooded demonstrators gathered near Boulevard Dëshmorët e Kombit, outside the main office of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Chanting calls for immediate political reform and the resignation of top officials, groups of young protesters aimed heavy pyrotechnics, slingshots, and Molotov cocktails directly at security cordons.

Riot officers clad in heavy body armor formed defensive shields to deflect incoming explosions and projectiles before responding with tactical deployments. Police unleashed repeated volleys of tear gas and deployed high-pressure water cannons to force crowds back, filling the surrounding boulevards with thick acrid smoke.

As law enforcement moved to clear the central plazas, skirmishes fractured into surrounding urban quarters. Demonstrators dragged municipal trash bins into major intersections, setting them ablaze to construct makeshift roadblocks aimed at slowing down police vehicles. Meanwhile, several government buildings and banking institutions suffered cracked facades, scorched entrances, and broken glass as clashes extended deep into the evening. Authorities confirmed that dozens of individuals were taken into custody following direct confrontations with law enforcement officers, while multiple officers and protesters sustained injuries from shrapnel, batons, and smoke inhalation.

Prime Minister Edi Rama rejected demands for his resignation, accusing opposition factions of fueling lawlessness to destabilize the nation’s political standing and derail ongoing integration efforts with the European Union. Meanwhile, civil rights groups and international observers have called for restraint, urging authorities to investigate claims of excessive force while encouraging all parties to pursue peaceful dialogue.

With additional protest rallies planned across major regional hubs, security forces maintain a reinforced presence throughout Tirana to secure public infrastructure.
