Explosion at Sea: Tanker Ignites in Black Sea Following Maritime Drone Attack Off Russian Coast

SOCHI — A Liberian-flagged oil tanker caught fire off Russia’s Black Sea coast near the resort city of Sochi after being struck by an unscrewed naval drone. The vessel, identified as the Aframax Rio, was carrying 23 Indian crew members when the strike ignited an intense onboard blaze and spilled burning crude oil into surrounding international waters. Russian maritime emergency forces deployed rapidly to the scene, successfully rescuing all 23 seafarers without any reported fatalities or serious injuries.

The strike targeted the commercial tanker while it navigated off the coast of the Sirius federal territory near Sochi. An unscrewed surface vessel (USV) detonated against the tanker's hull, causing flames to spread along the vessel's cargo tanks and spilling crude oil that ignited in the open sea.

Extensive firefighting operations were initially delayed due to the extreme heat and intensity of the blaze before emergency vessels could establish containment barriers.

Local authorities in the Sirius territory temporarily closed public beaches as environmental agencies monitored air and water quality following the offshore oil spill. Initial testing by regional environmental monitors indicated that atmospheric pollutant levels remained within safe legal thresholds.

Following the strike, Russian search and rescue teams executed a rapid evacuation, extracting all 23 Indian crew members directly from the vessel and transferring them safely ashore. Meanwhile, burning crude oil spilling into the sea created immediate offshore containment challenges, prompting authorities to order precautionary coastal closures across nearby resort zones. In response to the crisis, Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin convened an emergency response task force to coordinate specialized naval tugboats and chemical firefighting units at the scene.

The attack marks another sharp escalation in maritime warfare across the Black Sea, where commercial shipping and energy transport routes face increasing threats from autonomous surface drones. As naval drone capabilities advance, international shipping associations warn that war-risk insurance surcharges for Black Sea routes will continue to climb, forcing commercial carriers to reconsider navigation through vulnerable trade corridors.
