In a unanimous ruling, the European Court of Human Rights held that Czech police breached the right to life of Romani man Stanislav Tomáš, who died after a police intervention in 2021. The Court also found violations of the ban on inhuman or degrading treatment and that Czech authorities failed to ensure an effective, independent investigation. It further concluded there was insufficient scrutiny of whether racist motives influenced the force used, and said officials showed a “manifest lack of diligence.”
