Europe’s Major Rivers Hit Record Low Water Levels as Drought Worsens

Major rivers across Europe are hitting record low water levels, driven by prolonged heat and drought. Satellite observations show exceptionally low sections of the Loire, Po, Rhine and Danube, with sandbanks and gravel bars exposed where water normally covers them. The drop is disrupting inland cargo transport on the Rhine and creating serious cooling challenges for infrastructure along the Danube, while the Po faces mounting pressure for irrigation and hydropower. Authorities warn the situation is worsening, with economic and ecosystem impacts expanding.
