Europe’s appetite for Russian energy is shrinking fast. Now, EU officials say the European Commission is discussing a proposal to accelerate a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) as part of the bloc’s 19th sanctions package.
The move underscores how deeply energy remains tied to geopolitics. While the EU has already cut much of its reliance on Russian oil and pipeline gas since the invasion of Ukraine, LNG has lingered in the background — a quieter but still vital stream of revenue for Moscow.
Critics argue that delaying a ban on LNG undermines the moral and strategic weight of Europe’s broader sanctions effort. Every tanker that docks at a European port funnels cash into Russia’s war chest, offsetting the costs of sanctions elsewhere.
But accelerating a ban is not without risks. Some EU members still lean on LNG imports to stabilize their energy mix, especially during winter peaks. Balancing energy security with political resolve has always been Europe’s dilemma.
By pushing LNG into the next package, Brussels is signaling it no longer sees half measures as enough. The war has turned Europe’s energy system into a battlefield, and every cargo ship of LNG has become part of that fight.
