EU Gambling Levy Omitted From Irish MFF Budget Draft, but Remains Under Discussion

A proposed EU levy on online gambling was left out of the European Commission’s latest draft of the bloc’s 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework. Ireland’s EU Affairs Minister Thomas Byrne said in June that gambling, cryptocurrency and digital-services taxes were still under consideration, with technical work continuing. The omission therefore does not mean the idea has been ruled out. Ireland, which holds the rotating Council presidency during negotiations, will help broker discussions among member states. Any new EU revenue source would require agreement through the budget process.
