EU Could Fast-Track Britain's Membership if UK Decided to Reverse Brexit

The European Union (EU) has expressed a willingness to fast-track the United Kingdom's membership should the UK choose to reverse its Brexit decision. This sentiment was shared by Sandro Gozi, chair of the European delegation to the EU-UK Parliamentary Assembly, who stated that Britain's reapplication would be seen as a “major victory” for the European project.

In a recent interview, Gozi emphasized that the UK's significant past alignment with EU regulations and policies would allow for a much quicker accession process compared to other candidate nations. He noted that while discussions about joining the Euro would be a considerable point of negotiation, it should not be viewed as an insurmountable obstacle given the unique status of the UK.

The idea of rejoining the EU has gained traction within political circles, particularly following remarks from former health secretary Wes Streeting, who positioned rejoining as part of his leadership pitch for the Labour Party. A YouGov poll indicated that 55% of the British public favors rejoining the EU, reflecting a growing desire for closer ties with Europe.

However, Gozi also highlighted that the UK would need to accept the same terms as any other candidate country, which would include giving up certain “carve-outs” previously negotiated during its EU membership.

Despite the optimism from some EU officials, discussions on the UK's future involvement in the EU remain complex, with ongoing negotiations around existing arrangements, including trade agreements and regulatory alignments. The EU's focus remains on ensuring stability within its current membership while addressing the aspirations of countries like Ukraine looking to join the bloc.

As political discourse develops, the path toward a potential UK rejoining the EU will likely be a prominent topic in upcoming discussions and debates.
