Ethiopia Tells UN It Is Acting in Self-Defense Against Eritrea

Ethiopia told the UN Security Council on Friday that it was taking measures in self-defense, accusing Eritrea of sending troops across the border and occupying parts of northern Ethiopia. Addis Ababa did not specify what actions it planned. Eritrea rejected the claim, calling Ethiopia’s position a pretext for aggression and urging the Security Council to condemn it. The dispute comes amid rising tensions over Ethiopia’s demand for Red Sea access, including through Eritrea’s port of Assab. Both countries’ claims about troop movements remain contested.
